From Calton Hill

This is a series of shots from Calton Hill starting by looking almost west and moving round to the north.  I think I will have to split this in 2 posts. In the 4th picture, just to the right of the red chimney, you can see the flats from Saturday's picture.  Rather obtrusive for a not particularly large building.

Flats, Graham Street

A cold and sunny start to the day.  Relatively new flats close to work.

Shortbread House

To continue, after a fashion, in the food theme. No, not quite like the Gingerbread House.  This is the shortbread  factory in Tennant St., Leith.  What is unfortunately missing is the ability to photograph in "Aromarama".  The exhaust from the ovens is wonderful.

Daniels Bistro

There has been a lot of Waterfront/Docks development in Leith.  The old bonded warehouses at the edge of the docks were one of the first changes.  Leith isn't short of places to eat these days. The eponymous Daniel is from Alsace.  http://www.daniels-bistro.co.uk/

River Clyde

Glasgow again today for a trade show at the SECC. The river next to the exhibition halls and the the new BBC "Cube". 

Lampost

Edinburgh has lots of old ornate lamposts but the addition of modern lights tends to spoil them.  On a very grey day, here is one just outside work in Leith.

Calton Hill from Leith

Through in very dull Glasgow but returned to some glimpses of sun in Leith, so more of the same for today. Looking up Constitution Street, close to the entrance to the docks, towards the Calton Hill and Nelson's monument.

Seem to have got stuck in a contre jour mode.  St Mary's again, from further east.  The steeple in the foreground is North Leith Parish Church.

In Glasgow today, another dull wet one.  The art Galleries and Museum by the Kelvin, almost in spate.

Another dull day but a little light as it finishes.  Edward VII, (well his statue), in Victoria Park.

Grey Day on the Forth

I'ts gey dreich here at present.  Grey and sleety. Wasn't great the last two days but another night shot in the docks would seem excessive.  So, the reality of Edinburgh/Leith in winter, (all that snow and sunshine was probably just an illusion). Looking over the Forth towards Fife. 

Hirta

Back to Ocean Terminal again.  The berth in front of Britannia is now occupied by Hirta, one of the Fisheries Patrol vessels operating out of Leith.

The Royal Yacht Britannia (or should that be former Royal Yacht) moored at Ocean Terminal, Leith.  Although the snow has mostly gone from Leith the ice is clinging on.  The docks are still frozen in places as can be seen in the reflections.

Windy Forth, Icy Prom

Suddenly after the longest cold spell in 30 years we waken up to no snow in the streets and a more typical Edinburgh day, mostly dull and grey.  The photo is the prom on the Forth near Silverknowes, stripped of snow it is now pure ice but begining to melt. It is still about 2 inches thick.  You can see why there has been so much whinging about the cold.

West Lomond and the Bishop's Hill

Spent the day in Fife so todays photo is not Edinburgh or Leith but a fine little group of hills in the "Kingdom".

Arthur's Seat

Early morning mist shrouds Arthur's Seat.  Taken from near the Royal Observatory on Blackford Hill.  A little later, taken from the other side of the wall, the mist has been chased off by the sun and Edinburgh appears.

Leith Links

The west end of Leith Links.  The Links have several mounds like the one in the picture.  These were constructed during the Seige of Leith to elevate the cannons firing at the Citadel.

A further fall of snow last night and some sunshine this morning. Looking over Edinburgh from the Salisbury Crags in Holyrood Park.

Edinburgh from Dalmeny

Looking back to Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills.  You don't have to be far out of Edinburgh to encounter plenty snow.

New Year Fireworks Edinburgh Castle

Freezing start to the new decade.  The New Year fireworks as seen across the playing fields on Ferry Road. The castle is in there somewhere under the explosions and smoke.
