Old Scottish Office

This is the view from Jeffret Street, just off the Royal Mile.  Behind the building is Calton hill with Nelson's Monument to the right and the Dugald Stewart memorial to the left. In the foreground the end of Waverly Station and the new council offices intruding on the right. To the left of the SO is what remains of the "New Prison" and further lefyt the Calton Burial Ground.  The tall obelisk is a memorial to the "political martyrs" of 1793 who were transported for sedition and the little tower on the left is the 18th century philosopher David Hume's mausoleum.
The second photo is the new Council Offices complete with suicidal ratepayer sculpture.  Must get a close view of that.

  1. Do they still raise the ball on the Nelson monument at 1pm for the benefit of sailors on the Firth? Synchronised with the "one o'clock gun"? I'd completely forgotten about all that. It's an interesting phenomenon when you're in Princes Street to see thousands of people simultaneously check their watches. I've often thought it would be fun to film it, but to edit the soundtrack.

  2. The monument was refurbished last year. Not sure if they have started raising the ball again. They certainly intended to.
