Basement

The large and impressive houses of the New Town have basements, but not entirely subterranean, below street level but open.  This would have been the kitchens and household business sections of the house. Today they are likely to be separate dwelings or offices.  This modest frontage is the home of the Edinburgh International Book Festival in Charlotte Square. http://www.edbookfest.co.uk/
