Benchmark

Nowadays the term "benchmark" will usually be in some business comparison for people or products with the benchmark being some standard to measure against.  It was originally a term from surveying and the most common benchmarks you see are like this one, an Ordnance Survey cut mark, usually in stone.  This one is cut into Libberton Church.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benchmark_(surveying)
I suppose we will be inundated by sporting benchmarks in the next few weeks.

Candlemaker Row and Greyfriars

A genuine summer morning but dulled down this afternoon. One side of Candlemaker Row backs onto Greyfriars Kirkyard so the buildings come with built-in tombstones.  The plain headstone in the foreground marks the resting place of John Gray, master of Greyfriar's Bobby. You could rent a flat in one of the houses. http://www.embracescotland.co.uk/property_details.asp?property_id=527

Water of Leith

Back to summer.  Fairly heavy rain for most of the day. If Tony had been put back in place he would probably have been submerged by now.  (If he had been put back in place he would certainly have "collapsed" again).
