Granton Lighthouse
This is a strange beast. The view is from the rear of the building and you would expect to find seafront in short order to the left of the picture. Alas no. In the sixties the City Council, in their wisdom, created more land for industrial development along the Forth by filling in the area adjacent to Granton Harbour. This left the lighthouse stranded some distance from the sea (and created one miserable dump of an area). Recent plans for the redevelopment sought to channel a path back to the light creating a small marina but alas it was going to be too expensive so was scrapped. It would at any rate not have happened as the economic downturn has largely scuppered plans and development has all but halted. I will try and get a shot to illustrate its isolation.

"I see no ships...."
ReplyDeleteEven from the top you would need a big telescope.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but it never was a lighthouse! It was a lighthouse depot, used for training lighthouse keepers and as a store for supplies. See this page for more...
